CONCERT POSTERS

When I'm doing concert programming, I often start by the poster. I find it helps  to best understand the feel of the concert.  Graphic design for classical music is, in my opinion, some of the most thoughtless and inspiring work.  With fewer traditional media outlets covering classical music (and online algorithms artificially limiting who can even see your posts), having eye-catching is posters is still one of the best ways to get attention for your concert, so I tend to lean towards bold and colourful illustrations with minimal text intervention.

I have a particular interest in the design and typography of the mid-20th century and although I primarily use digital means to create, I often reference physical printing processes like silk screening and other hands-on media  like collages, construction paper cutouts, paints, and pastels.

Artistic posters also make great mementos to sell at your concerts; the posters I made for Autour de la flûte are sold in 12x18 prints at the venue. Audience members have regularly mentioned spotting posters around town and buying their tickets without knowing anything about the concert; the image told them everything they needed to know.  I think that's pretty cool !

ILLUSTRATION

Below is a selection of some of my illustrations.  I generally use the same bright and saturated colours that are found in my concert posters.  I like to distort and exaggerate natural forms and shy away from natural skin tones without wading into the realm of the dreaded Corporate Memphis style.

I enjoying trying to communicate an emotion or idea as succinctly as possible and have also used illustrations in my pedagogic piano volumes to help elucidate musical ideas to young children.  I primarily use vector-based illustration and a digital pencil with a graphic tablet but I will also use conventional methods when it suits the project.  Some of my prints are available for purchase through my online store.
